your neighbour boasts about how well their son is doing in school and now ur parents want u to b just as successful as thast nerdy next door.

from entering pri sch to graduating frm U, ur every move is shaped and ur path already drawn out for u, b4 u can make any decisions of ur own.

in a society whr competition is tough, whr the decision making lies not in urself but wit ur parents, it is not uncommon for some youth to bcome disillusioned and yearn to find meaning in life.

during the early teenage yrs, most teenagers seek personal development as they have big dreams and plans for themselves. they begin to tink about their personal values and the directions they want to pursue in life. however, they are inevitably caught up in the paper chase, thus leaving them lill time to pause their dreams and are sometimes caught in an identity crisis.

when this hapens, these young people tend to look to famous, beautiful wealthy or popular personalities as role models or symbols of success. there is thus a misguided notion that one has to own the latest fashion or gadget to b famous or popular.

take a walk down orchard road and you can c y the hunger for material goods smacks u right in the face- every 10 steps u take, u are greeted by billboards hawking expensive apparel, from nike shoes to quicksilver wear on hunky male ans gorgeous female models. add to that the celebrities who make occasional headlines with their latest hairdos or new car, and you can see wad msg are being sent out.

in the teenage yrs whr the 'cool' ones stand out, it is no wonder y some choose to model themselves after these celebrities so as to b popular among frens.

one ger in her late teens was horrified when her mother transformed her well conditioned jeans, complete with frays at the bottom and a tear near the knee area, into a pair of bermudas. she described her pair of jeans as a 'unique version' and reckoned that being different was simply quite cool.

then there are the rich frens who 'wow' you with the latest expensive hand phone by demonstrating its various functions and how advanced it is. it is natural for a teenager to feel envy at their fren's new acquisition, making him'her feel inferior and spurring him/her on to want to own the latest too. then when u decide tt ur old phone looks jus fine, frens snigger and make snide remarks. tis is no diff from how peer influence causes oone to err..

as we live in a society that has bcome affluent over time, such material comforts are affordable but does a branded product realli live up to its name? some argue tt owning the latest products is a temporary satisfaction and will wear off once it fails to fascinate others or when a newer version hits the market.
in an online forum, respondents feel tt brand names are usualli associated with image and quality, and would make the consumer feel good owning the product.

the general public is led to tink that a branded product is popular. however, the truth is tt a product is popular bcox of the amt of money spent to market ro advertise the product as well as to rope in popular celebrities to plug it.

wad happens if someone cannt afford these ex gds? in the worse case scenario, theft bcmes the ans to the prob. just lyk a recent case whr a ger, despo to win back her ex-bf, used a stolen credit card no. to buy flowers as a present for him.

a less despo method is adopted by a no. of students - working part- time while studying. acc to statistic from the Ministry of Manpower, there were about 6300 students who worked and studied last yr, a significant increase in no. frm 2001 to 2003.

some do it for pocket money and yet others to support their family. however, there are some students who work for other reasons such as to pay for the latest hand phone model or brand-name clothes and shoes.

is it worth it to spend so much time working jus to satisfy material needs? while working to pay for ur own bills and material needs demostrates independence, it may also mean having less time to concentrate on more impt priorities , lyk studying and preparing for exam.

there are oso other areas of life to b aware of . such as building relationships with ur family and frens , and enjoying life through sprts and learning nwe skills.

after all, life is not about wad possessions you have, but rather the experiences that you live, and ur contact with people, each wit a unique story to share.

you can almost nv find solace in material goods but can seek advice and comfort frm frens and family members. so treasure these ppl who help to mould ur character, and not the tings that will onli enhance the outward appearance. remeber that physical looks lose their shine over time. however, intangible assets such as positive chraracter traits remain wit you and strengthen as u grow.

you may b surprised to know, but there are individuals who have found their identity and whr they are heading do not care to b driven by such material needs. they keep their lives in check b being focused on wad they realli want in life and aim towards wad they hope to achieve. for tis grp of ppl, realism prevails over materialism.

onli if u are excessively preoccupied with acquring materal tings will it becme an area of concern, esp if u are selling ur soul or even resorting to law- breaking methods in exchange for such possessions.

material possessions can b wiped out in one dae but they can b re purcharsed, just as money lose can b earned again. however, family ties and memories cannt b bought as easily once they are lost. you do not want to live in a dream and live a life of regret.

so while u are working to earn money to buy the watch u haven been eyeing for a long time, do not forgt that there are other issurs lyk family and frens relationships that need time and attention to nurture. and perhaps. tou may want to pay ur nerdy neighbour a bisit to ask him for tips on how to score your way through the exams!
